Talk Title:
An Overview of the Science of USGS Western Ecological Research Center (WERC); Sea Otters as a Case History Example Relevant to Oregon.
Abstract:
Keith Miles will provide an overview of the diversity of ecological science conducted at the Western Ecological Research Center, including insights into the responsibilities of a USGS Principal Investigator. He will then provide a brief overview of sea otter research in the eastern Pacific, his thoughts on what might have contributed to the failed first reintroduction of sea otters on the Southwest Oregon coast in the early 1970s, and why the reintroduction at San Nicolas Island, CA, in the late 1980s took more than 20 years to 'take.' Such lessons learned could facilitate a successful reintroduction on the Oregon coast in the future.
