In Ralph Miller's final year as head coach, the OSU men's basketball team concluded the 1988-89 season with a record of 22-8 and 13-5 in conference play, ultimately losing in overtime to Evansville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Beavers were led on the floor by junior guard Gary Payton (20.1 points per game, 8.1 assists per game) and senior guard Eric Knox (16.4 ppg).
