Conrad J. "Bud" Weiser earned a Ph.D. in Horticulture from Oregon State College in 1960, and later served as head of the OSU Horticulture department from 1973-1991, and as Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences from 1991 to his retirement in 1993.
In this, the third of three interviews, he discusses his work to develop a strategic plan for OSU and to broaden the definition of scholarship at the university; his tenure as Dean of Agricultural Sciences; the opening of the Agricultural and Life Sciences building at OSU; and other reflections on his years as an administrator. From there the interview changes focus to Weiser's pursuits in retirement, including his interests in cultivating bonsai trees and carving stone. Through the latter activity, Weiser explains that he became closely connected with Native American communities in the Upper Midwest, and describes some aspects of this connection, including his participation as an observer at numerous sundance ceremonies.
This interview was conducted by Chris Petersen for inclusion in the History of Science Oral History Collection (OH 017), Special Collections and Archives Research Center, Oregon State University Libraries.
