Narrated by Jack Marincovich of the Columbia River Fishermen's Protective Union, this film details the work of fishing boats operating out of the Astoria, Oregon Mooring Basin. In so doing, "Columbia River Gillnetters" discusses multiple types of boats, gill nets and techniques used to catch fish as far up river as Bonneville Dam. The film also describes major fishing areas on the Columbia River, particulars associated with fishing at night, and the operation of the cannery tender boat.
"Columbia River Gillnetters" was photographed and edited by William C. Smith, and produced for the Oregon State University Sea Grant College Program by the OSU Extension Service Marine Advisory Program. The footage was digitized from a film original held in the Oregon Sea Grant Communications Moving Images (FV185:002), Special Collections and Archives Research Center, Oregon State University Libraries.
