Karina Ortiz was born in California in 1992.
When she was several months old her parents brought her to Hidalgo, Mexico
where she lived with her grandparents for three years. She then moved back to
the United States and grew up in Salem, Oregon. She graduated with her high
school diploma and Associates of Oregon Transfer Degree from Chemeketa
Community College in 2012. She attended Western Oregon University and after
graduating worked for Head Start. Ortiz then earned her Masters of Social Work
from Portland State University. At the time of the interview she was working at
the Early Learning Division for the Oregon Department of Education and was the
Salem-Keizer School Board Member for Zone 5.
