Silent footage of work being done on a Totem buoy from the stern of the R/V Yaquina. This may be a prototype or early version of the final, as it was painted red and appeared to be devoid of instrumentation. Footage includes the Yaquina and Totem together with another smaller support vessel, probably the Paiute. The buoy is towed offshore and tilted vertically and then tilted back to horizontal.
The Totem buoy project was described as follows in a 1970 issue of the Barometer newspaper: "Totem buoys are tubular steel devices about 180 feet long. They are towed into place horizontally, then rotated to float vertically. Moored with a specially developed two-point anchor, the Totems offer oceanographers and meteorologists an extremely stable platform on which to mount instruments to gather information."
