The Totem buoy was an OSU Department of Oceanography project carried out in 1967-1968. Constructed at the OSU Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon, the buoy spanned 184 feet and weighed 30 tons. After a successful test the year before, in June 1968 the Totem was towed to sea by the R/V Yaquina in a horizontal position, forced to a vertical position, anchored atop the Cobb Seamount, and subsequently used for oceanographic research.
