In this interview, Niess shares the story of her extended family with a particular focus on her mother. In this, Niess discusses her family's struggles with epilepsy and the manner in which epileptics were treated by state institutions in Oregon during the first half of the twentieth century, including policies ushered in by the Oregon Eugenics Law that included forced sterilization and institutionalization of those who suffered from the disease.
Maggie Niess earned three degrees from Oregon State in General Science/Mathematics Education and served as a faculty member in Science, Mathematics and Computer Science Education from 1980-2018.
