Structured observations of classroom teaching can be conducted for a variety of purposes including
professional development, evaluation, and research. The Teaching Dimensions Observation Protocol
(TDOP) is a tool designed to capture how five distinct aspects of teaching unfold throughout a class period
in descriptive rather than evaluative terms. In this training, we will introduce the TDOP and discuss how to
1) navigate the website, 2) use it to code video-taped lectures, and 3) use its automated inter-rater
reliability (IRR) and data export functions. The training will also focus on how to customize the TDOP so that
new codes can be used to fit local needs and interests.
