Environmental Science & Ethics: How to Live Appropriately in the World?

Western Forestry Graduate Research Symposium. 2013 Theme, "Canopies to Construction: the Ecology, Management and Use of Tomorrow's Forests." Dr. Michael Nelson is an environmental scholar and professor of environmental ethics and philosophy. His works include teachings and writings on the concept of wilderness, the philosophy of ecology, and the role of science and advocacy. At Oregon State University, he holds the Ruth H. Spaniol Chair in Natural Resources and is the Lead Principle Investigator for the HJ Andrews Forest Long-Term Ecological Research program. Dr. Nelson co-founded and co-directs the Conservation Ethics Group. He also serves as a Senior Fellow with the Spring Creek Project for Ideas, Nature, and the Written Word and as the philosopher in residence of the Isle Royale Wolf-Moose Project (the world’s longest continuous study of a predator-prey system). With his rich depth of questioning traditional research divides and moral considerations impacting the social-ecological environment, Dr. Nelson’s keynote address will focus on interdisciplinary collaborations inherently necessary in environmental research and how we can progress the environmental ethics discussion across boundaries.For more information: http://fes.forestry.oregonstate.edu/faculty/nelson-michael-p .
