In 1996-97, the Beaver men's basketball team was led by three freshmen - Carson Cunningham, Corey Benjamin and Ron Grady - and compiled a season record of 7-20, with just three wins in conference. The OSU women's team was led by center Tina Lelas, who averaged 15.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game on the season. The women's squad finished the year with a record of 11-16 and 5-13 in Pac-10 play.
