Though the Beavers came into this game with a record of 4-3 on the season, few gave Oregon State much of a chance of defeating #3 USC, who at the time had won twenty-seven straight conference games. OSU's tense 33-31 victory, in which they held off a furious rally, shocked the college football world and set the stage for a successful season in which the Beavers finished 10-4 and defeated Missouri in the Sun Bowl. Versus the Trojans, Oregon State was led by quarterback Matt Moore, who completed 21 of 32 pass attempts for 262 yards. Back-up running back Clinton Polk added 100 yards rushing on 22 carries, and wide receiver Sammie Stroughter tallied 127 receiving yards and also returned a USC punt for a touchdown.
