OSU’s interdisciplinary humanitarian engineering program encourages students to design solutions in their broader context, considering not only the technical aspects of a problem but the environmental, social and economic considerations as well. As such, our programming includes an experiential requirement where students engage with people in their communities under the guidance of Hartman’s principles of fair-trade learning. This talk will introduce those principles and share examples of their pedagogical application in two humanitarian engineering classes, including “Household Energy in Guatemala” and “Introduction to Community Engagement and Community-Based Design”.
